The total fight concept
The Roman army was an extraordinary combining of different and specialized departments. The Roman infantry, both in Republican and Imperial epoch foresaw Gravis Armaturae, Exepediti and different departments of Levis Armaturae (Velites, Lanceari, etc), that competed together to create a tactical equilibrium complex and effectiveness.
Often the roles of infantry were interchangeable with the simple change of some parts of the equipment. To do this, the Romans organized an extraordinary logistics for the transport and the distribution 'ad hoc' of the armaments.
Only sector that suffered a substantial transformation in the time was instead the Cavalry, that became the true military 'compensation' to the changed dimensions of the Roman, territory and consequent tactical necessity
