L'hoplomachus è la nuova denominazione a cui viene soggetto il samnis, laddove questo è opposto ai thraeces. L'armatura del samnis primordiale evolve in una specializzazione contro questi avversari; è l' elmo anzitutto a subire una notevole amplificazione degli elementi difensivi, come tese e cresta. Egli conserverà però sempre il tradizionale scudo sannitico, caratterizzato da una forma oblunga, trapezoidale o incuneata.
La sua specializzazione nel combattere contro armature leggere e aggressive, lo porta (raramente) ad incontri col dimachaereus, una sorta di esasperazione del thraex di tipo 'B' e (ancor più raramente) contro il myrmillo di tipo 'A' (con armatura gallica).
Il suo nome deriva dalla categoria da duello greco-campana dell'hoplomachia, nella quale erano incluse tutte le armature dotate di scudi grandi e voluminosi.

The hoplomachus is the new denomination to which comes the samnis, whereas this is opposite to the thraeces. The armor of the primordial samnis evolves in a specialization against these adversaries; it is the helmet indeed to suffer a notable amplification of the defensive elements as brims and crest. Always he will preserve however the traditional samnitic shield characterized by an oblong, trapezoidal or wedged form.
His specialization against light and aggressive armors, bring him (rarely) to fight with the dimachaereus, a sort of exasperation of the thraex 'B' type, and (more rarely) against the myrmillo 'A' type (with Gallic armor).
His name derives from the Greek-Campanian duel category of the hoplomachia, in which were included all the armors endowed with great and voluminous shields.
