Nasce tra la fine del I secolo a.C. e gli inizi del I d.C., a partire dall’armatura gallica del myrmillo tipo A. L’evoluzione di questa categoria è dovuta alla peculiarità del duello coi thraeces, dove l’originaria armatura gallica è costretta ad aumentare notevolmente le difese, per sostenere il duello a distanza ravvicinata. Il myrmillo B è caratterizzato infatti da un grande scudo rettangolare e convesso, di derivazione militare romano-italica. L’elmo, da globulare, si arricchisce di grandi tese e cresta per sbarrare i colpi circolari e discendenti del thraex, mirati al collo e alle spalle.
Il myrmillo tipo B diventa l’icona globale di tutte le diverse armature mirmilloniche (anche dunque del tipo A e del tipo C); nelle steli funerarie, a dispetto della specialità nella quale il defunto aveva combattuto, veniva rappresentato sempre con l’armatura di tipo B. Raramente il myrmillo B è opposto anche a un provocator.
It is born among the end of the I century b.C. and the beginnings of the I AD, deriving from the Gallic armor of the myrmillo A type. The evolution of this category is due to the peculiarity of the duel with the thraeces, where the native Gallic armor is forced to increase the defenses notably, to sustain the fight to very closer distance. In fact, the myrmillo B is characterized from a great rectangular and convex shield by Roman-italic military derivation. The helmet, from globular, it becomes wealthy of great brims and crest to block the circular and descending hits of the thraex, look at to the neck and the shoulders.
The myrmillo B type becomes the global icon of all the different mirmillonics armors (type A and type C too); in the funeral relief, in spite of the specialty in which the dead person had fought, they was always represented with the armor type B.
Rarely the myrmillo B is also opposite to a provocator.
