E’ il nome generico dell’armatura specialistica opposta al retiarius. Si tratta di una singola categoria evoluta dal myrmillo A, dal myrmillo B e dal samnis, giunta a perfezionare talune componenti per far fronte al duello contro il tridente e la rete. L’elmo anzitutto, derivato dal modello liscio e globulare del gladiatore gallus (myrmillo A), viene irrobustito e dotato di una fine cresta a forma di mezzaluna, per ridurre l’attrito della rete sulla testa. Lo scudo può avere forma mirmillonica rettangolare convesso, o forma sannitica, trapezoidale o incuneata. La protezione alla gamba è estremamente robusta, caratterizzata da una piastra metallica sulla tibia avanzata, aggrappata a un massiccio tibiale di lino imbottito di lana, per assorbire i violenti colpi di fiocina.
Il contraretiarius può essere un myrmillo (myrmillo tipo C, o myrmillo contrarete) o anche un secutor. A dispetto dell’armatura identica, e dell’avversario identico, i myrmillones contrarete e i secutores erano due corporazioni distinte e non mischiabili.
It's the generic name of the specialistic armor opposite to the retiarius. It deals of a single category evolved by the myrmillo A, the myrmillo B and the samnis, reaches to improve some component for the perfect duel against the trident and the net. The helmet indeed derived by the smooth and globular model of the gladiator gallus (myrmillo A), it is strengthened and endowed with an thin crest to form of half-moon to reduce the attrition of the net on the head. The shield could have a convex rectangular form (myrmillonics), or trapezoidal or wedged forms (samnitics). The protection to the leg is extremely strong, characterized by a metallic plate on the advanced tibia, seized to a thick tibial of linen stuffed of wool to absorb the violent hits of trident.
The contraretiarius can be a myrmillo (myrmillo C type or myrmillo contrarete) or also a secutor. In spite of the identical armor, and of the identical adversary, the myrmilloneses contrarete and the secutoreses were two separate and not mixable guilds.
