Lo scissor contrarete deriva da una più ampia categoria di trinciatori, gli arbelai, opposti tra loro in duello (forse legati ai combattimenti coi carri, essedarii), caratterizzati da armi dotate di artigli o piccole falci (dimachaereus), atte ad agganciare e recidere con facilità qualunque cosa. Nella versione contraretiarius, lo scissor conserva il malleus, un cono metallico dotato all'estremità di una mezzaluna appuntita atta ad agganciare e tagliare, e due massicce protezioni alle tibie, costituite da tibiali di lino imbottiti e da piastre metalliche. Rispetto al combattimento tra arbelai-scissores, contro il retiarius questa categoria è dotata di corazza a squame, o tuniche imbottite di lana (cento). Anche l’elmo cambia, adottando la tipica galea dei contraretiarii-secutores, globulare e con fine cresta a forma di mezzaluna, per ridurre l’attrito del tridente e della rete sulla testa.
The scissor contrarete derives from an ampler category of carvers, the arbelai, opposite among them in duel (maybe legacy to the fights on the wagons, essedarii), characterized by weapons endowed with claws or small scythes (dimachaereus), fit to hook and to cut easily anything. In the contraretiarius version, the scissor preserves the malleus, a metallic cone gifted to the extremity with a fit pointed in half-moon form, to hook and to cut, and two thick protections to the tibias, constituted from tibial of linen stuffed and from metallic plates. In comparison to the fight among arbelai-scissores, against the retiarius this category endowed with squamed caress or stuffed tunics of wool (cento). Also the helmet changes, adopting the typical galea of the contraretiarii-secutores, globular and with end crest to half-moon form, to reduce the attrition of the trident and the net on the head.
